The Head Athletic Therapist, in co-operation with all performance enhancement personnel and specific members of the Health & Performance Centre, is an integral part of a total service to maximize the performance and welfare of the student-athlete.

Reporting to the Manager, Athlete Services, the Head Athletic Therapist is responsible for:

  • Leadership of the Athletic Therapy department ensuring communication to all reports and that medical policies and best practices are being adhered to
  • Supervision and guidance to the Assistant Athletic Therapists in the unit
  • Provision of therapeutic activities involved with the prevention, immediate care, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of sports injuries associated with University of Guelph Varsity athletes (training, assessment, prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries)
  • Delivery of clinical/field athletic therapy for varsity athletes and teams
  • Supervision of the student trainer program (Sheridan and UofG) with extensive support and collaboration from the Assistant Athletic Therapist
  • Overseeing and ensuring the delivery of student-athlete screenings including concussion baseline testing in collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Therapist
  • Overseeing the management of policies necessary to complement the elite athletics program offered by the Department of Athletics in collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Therapist. 

The Head Athletic Therapist works closely with the Assistant Athletic Therapists, the Clinical Lead at the Health and Performance Centre and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in Athletics. They are responsible for operating under U SPORTS and OUA operating bylaws, University policies, and the philosophy and objectives of the Intercollegiate Program and Athletics Department. In this role, the incumbent must value diversity of experiences and perspectives and they will play a significant role in supporting and enhancing Safe Sport, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and community building efforts, actions, and initiatives.

The Head Athletic Therapist is responsible for liaising with the coaching staff(s) of all teams with athletes that they are treating to provide information to ensure the highest standards towards the safe participation of athletes in the training and competitive schedules.  In addition, this position is also responsible for ensuring that all Department, Provincial and National medical policies are met.  This includes being familiar with the standards on medications and supplements to ensure compliance by the individual athletes. They will also advise and direct as needed with respect to a safe training environment.

This role oversees the student trainer portfolio and is supported by the Assistant Athletic Therapist as required on allocation and training of all student-trainers. This role must provide mentorship to all student-trainers working with teams, specifically those who work on the teams lead by this position.

This Head Athletic Therapist is responsible for teaching the BIOL*3650 course that ensures our student trainers are educated for their positions.

Requirements of this position include:

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field along with several years serving as a Head Athletic Therapist in an Elite contact sport context (preferably Football);
  • Completion of an accredited certified Athletic Therapy program along with the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association certification (CATA) is required;
  • The incumbent must currently be in good standing with both the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association and their regional association;
  • Certified Sport First Responder (or equivalent) with CPR-HPC and AED certification;
  • Knowledge of Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports (CCES) policies and procedures.

This position requires working non-traditional hours, often for extended periods of time outside of the course of a typical working day including evenings, weekends and holidays.
