$150,000- $200,000 per year, prorated to contract, plus benefits

Requirements:
5-10 years of experience in a senior management or executive leadership role, ideally in an Indigenous-led or Indigenous-serving organization
Bachelor’s degree in public policy, nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field

Our Approach

Education in Canada is a success story. Study after study shows that our public schools are among the best in the world. But high overall quality masks deep inequality. Only 48 percent of First Nations youth living on reserve have a high school diploma. In the North, those numbers are even lower. And, too often, teachers arrive in northern First Nations without the preparation and support they need to succeed—and stay—in the classroom. The twin challenges of teacher supply and turnover compound historical injustice and systemic inequities to produce a statistical education gap between First Nations and non-First Nations communities.

Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada is a non-profit organization that works with northern First Nations to recruit, prepare, and support committed teachers who will increase student outcomes in the North. This model has been defined by First Nations community partners, our Circle of Advisors, our Board of Directors, and experienced northern educators.

Your Responsibilities

The President reports to Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada’s Board of Directors and operates as the principal executive of the organization with full responsibility for financial decisions and execution of strategy as directed by the Board. They are tasked with driving the top and bottom-line growth for the organization. Reporting to the Board will consist of a progress review after the first three months and an annual evaluation.

The President will play a critical role as a Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada ambassador to Chiefs and Councils and Education Directors from community partners, Indigenous organizations such as Provincial and Territorial Organizations and tribal councils, the federal government, provincial governments, and donors. Specific responsibilities include:

• Lead the organization, promote a culture of excellence, and oversee a high-performing team
• Be a key ambassador to First Nations community partners, lead government relations efforts, and be a trusted partner to external stakeholders
• Take centre-stage in fundraising efforts on behalf of Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada
• Ensure implementation of strategy in complex context
• Be accountable for the financial and operational success of Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada
• Perform additional duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned

Your Fit

• Executive leadership: Has deep management and organizational leadership experience, including people management, business development, and financial reporting responsibilities
• Fundraising: Has experience fundraising for a charitable organization or possesses skills needed to fundraise effectively
• Indigenous communities: Has worked with or has deep knowledge of Indigenous and/or northern communities
• Partnership development: Has experience developing multi-stakeholder partnerships for complex systems change projects
• Government relations: Has skills and experience in navigating federal, provincial, and Indigenous governments, and forming partnerships with government stakeholders
• Influence: Effectively communicates Gakino’amaage: Teach For Canada’s mission and vision to different audiences, including internal team, donors, and others
• Leadership: Develops and implements high-level strategic direction with personal integrity, balancing a drive for results and strong relationships
