The Office of the Dean at the Ontario Veterinary College is seeking a dynamic and motivated Communications Specialist to support the development and execution of strategic communications plans to promote OVC programs and research initiatives. OVC was recently awarded a $11M gift to allow the college to envision a more equitable future for veterinary education and healthcare – enhancing our communications team is an important strategy in achieving this goal.

Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications and working closely with two Marketing Communications Officers and a Marketing Communications Coordinator, the Communications Specialist will support both internal and external communications activities for various researchers, research centres and institutes, and programs affiliated with the Ontario Veterinary College, including Dairy at Guelph, the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) and the Kim and Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program.

The Specialist works closely with both the OVC Marketing & Communications team and University of Guelph Communications and Public Affairs team, as well as with the directors and staff of the affiliated research centres and programs, to advance connections among researchers and to promote the capability and accomplishments of the centres and programs.

The primary activities and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Develop communications and marketing plans to support the promotion of research projects, programs, initiatives, and events
  • Advise graduate students and research associates about effective science writing and communication techniques
  • Suggest and implement new methods and means of achieving communication goals for researchers, research centres and/or programs and initiatives
  • Develop and produce content for various mediums including news releases, research summaries, video materials, reports, brochures, social media posts, newsletter content, and program materials
  • Measure and report traffic, engagement, impressions, views, and feedback on website and social platforms
  • Support the execution of virtual and in-person events and special projects, including Research Showcase events, trade fairs, webinars, and presentations.

The ideal candidate for this position:

  • has a degree in communications, marketing, public relations or journalism and 3-5 years of professional experience in the field
  • is self-motivated, organized, resourceful, pays attention to detail and works well independently and as part of a team
  • has excellent writing and editing skills across all mediums, and a demonstrated ability to translate scientific information accurately to a variety of audiences
  • has experience managing digital platforms and social media accounts for a business and has working knowledge of content management systems such as Drupal, SharePoint, WordPress, Canva, Hootsuite and/or Facebook Business Suite
  • can produce compelling visual assets to enhance the college’s storytelling efforts
  • brings new creative ideas and perspectives to connect with target audiences
  • has some awareness or understanding of animal welfare issues, the social determinants of health for both animals and humans, and the agriculture and/or dairy industries

The Marketing Communications team has adopted a hybrid model of remote and on-campus work.
